Dr Clayton and his cosmetic team use a technique known as micro needling to treat acne scarring. Microneedling is a type of treatment that uses very small needles to cause tiny pricks in the skin. These tiny contact points encourage the body to create a wound healing response and renew the skin cells. As your skin repairs, the production of collagen and elastin is triggered to give an almost immediate plumping effect. It can also help tackle other skin damage such as scarring, dark marks, sun damage and ageing. This technique has been used for several years and there is a considerable and growing evidence base for its use in dermatology.
The video below explains how it works:
HOW DOES NEEDLING FEEL?
Dr Clayton applies a numbing cream to the area before carrying out Dermapen treatments to ensure any pain is minimised. Variable treatment intensities allow us to further control the comfort of the treatment. The majority of patients barely feel anything and commonly report feeling vibration rather than intense pain.
HOW SOON WILL I NOTICE RESULTS?
A skin plumping effect is usually observed almost immediately. Although the natural healing process does take time and it can take up to six weeks before you see significant results – although some improvements can be seen much sooner. The process will continue over the following months and at least 3 treatments are usually required.
DERMA Fractionated Needling System (FNS)
Dr Tim Clayton uses the Derma FNS. This is highly effective in facial rejuvenation, extensively improving the appearance of tired, dull skin and finely lined skin. It also significantly improves the appearance of stretch marks and scars including chicken pox scars and three types of acne scars (ice pick, box and rolling). 3-5 treatments are recommended by Dr Tim Clayton to achieve maximal results. Dr Clayton may also advise a chemical peel before treatment. Dr Clayton may also use the derma fns in combination with various peptides and minerals to penetrate into the skin.
Derma FNS uses a unique method to insert fine needles into the epidermis to encourage collagen production. Unlike other microneedling treatments, the Derma FNS vertically penetrates the skin, which produces less skin damage, but the same effective results as other treatments.
The automatic vibrating function of Derma FNS increases the effectiveness of treatment by increasing absorption of a solution which contains hyaluronic acid, minerals, vitamins and peptides, applied during the treatment, further increasing collagen and elastin production for improved rejuvenation results.
Due to the vertical insertion of the needles there is reduced discomfort and bleeding than most other forms of microneedling. The design also makes it easy to manoeuvre around all facial contours which means that problem areas which were previously untreatable, such as around the eyes, can now be treated.
WHAT DO I DO AFTERCARE?
After your treatment, your skin will appear red/pink and flushed; a normal sign that the treatment is working and this will subside usually within 48hrs. We do advise that SPF 30 should be worn daily following on from the treatment for at least two weeks. An ongoing effective daily skincare regime is crucial to help promote and achieve optimum results.
You may look and feel as though you have sunburn, to ensure your skin returns to normal as quickly as possible and to achieve the best results we advise:
- Always make sure that your hands are thoroughly clean when touching the treatment area post procedure.
- Aggressive Skin Care Products should be avoided until the redness has subsided and it is recommended that makeup is not applied for 24 hours after the procedure.
- Avoid sauna’s, exercise, hot baths/showers until the redness has gone (this is usually within 24 hours minimum)
- Avoid intensive sunlight exposure and artificial UV exposure for a period of atleast 2-3 weeks after the procedure.
- Fake tan should not be applied 10-14 days prior, and 7 days following a Dermapen treatment
